Walt Disney Pictures’ Freakier Friday is the sequel to the 2003 comedy starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Both returned to reprise their roles as Tess (Curtis) and Anna Coleman (Lohan), with the story picking up years after the two endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own, and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning can indeed strike twice, disrupting their identities once again.
Nisha Ganatra directed the feature, which was color graded at Light Iron (www.panavision.com), with Corinne Bogdanowicz serving as supervising colorist.
“The filmmakers wanted a look that was more of an ’80s throwback,” Bogdanowicz recalls. “Not literally an ’80s film look, but a nod to earlier comedies.”
Bogdanowicz started with a slightly filmic look that she had built for use on-set.
“But once I got the footage and started putting the look together, it definitely evolved,” she shares. “We wanted to keep a richness in the images and some warmth to match such a fun movie. The resulting grade was colorful and warm, with some nice cool undertones and separation that kept it really interesting and unique.”
The film’s director of photography Matt Clark and director Nisha Ganatra were involved in the final grade, coming into the studio for color sessions.
“I have worked with Matt Clark for several years – and many projects – and I think because we trust each other, the color process goes very smoothly,” says Bogdanowicz. “Matt let me do a first pass, and when he came in, it was already in a good place to start polishing. Matt is an extremely talented DP, so it makes my job easy!”
Bogdanowicz used FilmLight’s Baselight system for the grading process.
