SMPTE & Sony to partner on 360 VME event

CULVER CITY, CA - Hollywood SMPTE and Sony Pictures Entertainment, here, will host a session that looks at the technical underpinnings of the Sony 360 VME virtual mixing environment. The event will also address the practical aspects of using the technology for virtualizing the experience of mixing a show at any given studio.

The meeting will be held in Sony’s historic Scenic Arts building. Before the 7:30pm event, there will be individual personal demonstrations of how it works and sounds for the first 48 attendees who want to participate. This will entail individually measuring and analyzing the sound received in each ear canal of each person. When each respective set of measurements is complete, an individual profile will be created for each listener. That profile will then be used by the Sony 360 VME renderer to create fully immersive sound in headphones that precisely matches the immersive sound in the room of choice. Sounds will be perceived as being out in front of the listener, from behind the listener, above the listener and all around the listener — exactly as it occurs in the room, except that it’s coming from a pair of headphones.

Scheduling for individual measurements and personalization will be managed in advance by Sony. It will occur earlier on the 27th at Sony from 2:30pm to 6:30pm. Those interested in signing up for the earlier demonstration should sign up at the following links:
