Apple TV+'s Palm Royale is a comedy series about underdog Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig), who endeavors to break into Palm Beach's high society. The series is set in 1969, and is nominated for a number Emmy Awards, including those for Production Design, Costumes, Main Title Design, Lead Actress and Supporting Actress.
Composer Jeff Toyne (pictured above) received nominations in both the "Outstanding Music Composition for a Series" category and the "Outstanding Main Title Theme Music" category.
"It was a real delight to dive into the music and recordings of film composers active in the '60s for this project, especially Henry Mancini and Bernard Herrmann," Tony explains. "One of the particular challenges for this project was creating convincing demo mockups of big-band jazz. I was aided by fantastic pianist Josh Nelson and a wonderful music team that included arrangers Marcus Sjowall, Andrew Raiher, Aiko Fukushima (and) Fabio Caviedes; assistant Liz Dimo; music editor Chris Brooks; and mixers Oren Hadar and Josh Minyard."
Toyne's set-up includes an Oscar Schmidt acoustic/electric 21 chord autoharp, Hohner Super 64 Performance Chromatic Harmonica, Grace Design M101 preamps, Universal Audio LA-610 MkII recording channels, a Yamaha C7 concert grand piano (which records using DPA 4099 microphones), Shure SM57 and KSM27 mics, as well as Neumann’s TLM 103. He also calls on his Teac A-3440 and A-3340S ¼-inch, four-channel reel-to-reel tape recorders.
