Frame.io addresses HDR workflows with new V.3.7 release

NEW YORK CITY — Frame.io (https://frame.io), the maker of the video review and collaboration platform of the same name, has launched Frame.io V.3.7, which allows work in progress to be shared at the same high quality used by leading streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and Disney+.

With HDR becoming the new delivery standard, offering a wider range of image contrast, color and clarity, the company is supporting filmmakers in making the leap with HDR playback on all HDR-compatible iOS devices. The new release no longer limits users to HD, H.264, 8-bit color or Rec. 709. Pros can now share work in their choice of P3 or Rec. 2020 cinema space, DCI 4K, H.265, 10-bit color, or PQ gamma.

According to Frame.io’s Michael Cioni, the company realized back in March that with remote workflows growing due to the pandemic, the company needed to elevate the quality available to distributed teams. They deployed a rapid response effort to improve the platform so that directors and DPs could approve masters on readily-available devices, such as Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro or LG’s C9 or CX monitors.

Frame.io is also launching the full version of its high-speed file sharing app, Frame.io Transfer, with more customizable control over how users move creative assets. Transfer now lets users upload and download large files, entire folders or entire projects effortlessly. Creatives can also configure upload and download rates using Frame.io’s new bandwidth allocation panel, so they can optimize for speed or multitask more easily while transfers are in progress.

Frame.io’s Final Cut Pro X Workflow Extension, when used with V.3.7 and Apple’s latest release of Final Cut 10.4.9, makes distributed workflows more powerful and flexible. New proxy media tools make it faster and easier to move and share media. H.264 and ProRes proxy files can be viewed in a variety of resolutions and sizes, and easily downloaded in the background by dragging from the Frame.io extension directly into Final Cut.

New for enterprise account holders, admin controls let account owners and administrators set up safeguards that protect content and control viewing, downloading and sharing permissions. These new features let users customize security settings for a wide range of workflows and users across an organization. The internal watermark ID feature allows admins to set internal watermarking configurations and manage watermark templates on a per-team basis to prevent unauthorized users from capturing or distributing unwatermarked assets. Users can also adjust the position, text color and opacity of a watermark ID template so as not to interfere with viewing content.

Other improvements include better responsive and precision when navigating through projects, as well as making it easier to leave feedback. Users can now jump forward and backward to quickly navigate through a video to find a specific scene or section just by double tapping the right or left side of the screen. They can also set custom jump intervals from one frame to 30 minutes. And a new preview feature allows users to scrub through frame-accurate thumbnails of clips just by dragging the playhead.
