Sony debuts high frame rate 4K camera & 4K OLED display

LAS VEGAS — Sony made several announcements at their annual NAB press event in Las Vegas, including the introduction of the new HDC-4800 — a 4K, high-framerate camera that can offer 8x slow motion (16x in HD).

The HDC-4800 uses a new Super 35mm 4K CMOS sensor and wide color space (BT.2020 and BT.709). It also supports PL mount lenses that can capture high resolution, clear and crisp images for live sports shooting. HDR support is under development and will be available in the near future. The HDC-4800 will be available in August.

The company also introduced the new PVM-X550, a 55-inch 4K OLED monitor designed for client viewing and verifying 4K footage during production. The PVM-X550 is a quad-view OLED monitor, allowing customized individual display settings across four distinct views in HD, including: electro-optical transfer function (EOTF), color space, transfer matrix and color temperature. Sony plans to deliver the camera this summer.

And on the media side, Sony unveiled the second generation of its Optical Disc Archive System, which adopts a new, high-capacity optical media developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic. This new media is rated with a 100-year shelf life, and doubles the capacity of a single cartridge to 3.3TBs. The company is offering an eight-channel optical drive unit that doubles read/write speeds over the previous generation, accommodating 4K video in realtime and meeting the users’ increasing data storage needs.
