BURBANK — Roush Media (Roush-Media.com) recently handled finishing, color grading and digital cinema mastering for the film I'm Not Ashamed, which sees theatrical release on October 21st. The feature is based on the journals of Rachel Scott, a victim of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Colorado.
Producer/director Brian Baugh selected Roush for the project. The studio managed all the creative finishing services of the film, including VFX plates and color management at 6K, archival footage restoration and image processing, the DI conform of the original camera negative at 6K, DI color grading and texture image processing for grain at 6K, graphics and VFX, and 4K delivery for theaters and VOD.
Once the locked cut was delivered, Roush Media brought the Red Epic 6K r3d files in and made 6K uncompressed DPX files for the color session. The studio’s SAN — an Infortrend and Tiger Technologies system — can manage and playback 8K DPX in realtime, if necessary.
At one point, a pick up shoot took place in Colorado on a Saturday and the Red files were uploaded to Roush in Burbank to create dailies that were then sent to Tennessee for editorial. The new cut was sent back to Roush to update the DI all by the end of Sunday for a Monday mastering of the 4K DCP.
Roush employed its Digital Vision Nucoda Film Master system and Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve for the color grade. The studio’s Barco 4K theater was used for the theatrical version and the 4K Sony BVM X300 HDR suite was used for the video on demand trim pass.
Some of the low light scenes presented challenges due to noise and underexposure. Director Brian Baugh was very happy with senior colorist Keith Roush’s expertise in bringing back the proper exposure and look while minimizing noise and grain.
"This is a amazing story of a young girl's life that has touched and changed the lives of many,” says Roush. “Working with director Brian Baugh on this film was a joy. It's an honor to be a part of a team with the vision of hope and life. Roush Media is happy to support the independent producer/director with this wonderfully told and important story."
