LAS VEGAS — In conjunction with the NAB show in Las Vegas, Apple is releasing Version 10.2 of its Final Cut Pro editing application. While the company is not formally exhibiting on the NAB show floor, Apple did give Post a look at the upgrade prior to its public release on Monday.
One of the biggest new features touted in the 10.2 release is the ability to create 3D titles within the application. According to Apple, as many as 65 percent of FCP users create titles within the app, so the desire for 3D capabilities was a top request. Users can now add depth to text, add lighting and textures/materials, as well as rotate their designs and create camera moves. Designs can be saved as Motion templates and even shared with other FCP users or sold online.
Other 10.2 enhancements include better handling of Red Raw files. The GPU now accelerates optimization of files for immediate editing on the timeline. Users can work with the optimized ProRes 4444 versions of the media, or revert back to the Raw files if they desire. Additional features include the ability to access up to four video scopes at the same time, support for new camera formats, the faster processing of audio waveforms, and the ability for users to create smart libraries for quickly and easily accessing media.
Apple will continue to sell Final Cut Pro 10.2 for its long-standing price of $299 and existing FCP X users can upgrade to the new release for free. System requirements include the Yosemite OS.
