Check Out Girl was
shot using a Panasonic AG-HVX200 DVCPRO HD P2 camcorder, and features a
cashier, who comments on every Doritos purchase that one customer makes. "Old
school," she barks while scanning the Nacho Cheese bag, and "They're hot!" she
remarks regarding the Fiery Habanero flavor. Each comment gets the guy buying
the chips more excited. The spot closes with her requesting a "clean up" over
the public address system and snacking on a chip.
The commercial was written by West's friend, writer/director
Kristin Dehnert, and was produced after-hours in a Los Angeles-area grocery
store over a three-hour period. West used two 8GB P2 cards to shoot the spot in
high definition at 720pN. He had a camera assistant on-set working with a
laptop with two hard drives. Full P2 cards were downloaded to one external hard
drive and then copied to the second drive as an archive.
The commercial was edited by Kindra Marra on Avid Media
Composer V.2.6 with Avid Mojo SDI. It was later uploaded to the Doritos site as
a QuickTime file. The filmmakers also submitted a mastered original in two
formats: a D-5 HD version and a Digi Beta NTSC 4:3 letterboxed version for
network airing.
