The Viking scene dynamically transitions to other
mystical settings, including ones with wizards and fairy princesses. As the
spot evolves, animation once again meets contemporary imagery of the Odyssey,
clearly leaving viewers with a better understanding of the minivan's roots,
which stem back to the days of "van coolness." Heart's "Barracuda" track drives
the commercial with its heavy guitar riffs.
Nylon (www.nylon.la)
directed both the live action and animation on Viking, which included the signature fuzzy line quality of
the airbush style. All of the design was handled within
Photoshop, and After Effects was used for compositing. Autodesk 3DS Max and
Maya were used to create all of the environments. Maxon's Cinema 4D was used to
create the growing trees and the dragonfly in the last scene. Liquid
simulations and dynamics were executed using Real Flow. Live action of the van
was composited with CG imagery using Eyeon Fusion.
Joe Montalbano executive produced the animation and live
action for Nylon. Designers on the project included Bryan Lee, Jason Cook,
Wonhee Lee and Tomas Pena. Sungwook Su, Kevin Kim, Jae Hyun Yoo and Hojun Oh
served as 3D animators.
Titmouse Inc. provided character design and character
animation. Magnus Hierta and Sam Sparks served as compositors and Edgar Diaz
was rotoscope artist.
Riot in Santa Monica handled VFX/online for the project. Andy
Davis was Inferno artist and Cecile F. Tecson and Robert Tatum handled
rotoscoping.
