The PCM-D50 provides 96 kHz/24-bit recording, two-position
electret condenser stereo microphones, and PC/Mac file transfer capabilities via
a high-speed USB interface, all for under $600. Its predecessor was priced around $2,000.
The unit is equipped with an internal 4GB hard drive that
allows users to record up to six hours of audio at the 44.1kHz/16-bit sample
rate. A Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo Slot is also incorporated into the unit for
additional recording possibilities.
Sound is recorded in the .WAV format, and a five second
pre-recording buffer helps to make sure field recordists don't miss a take. LCD
digital peak metering in the face of the unit helps keep tabs of levels, file
and battery info. The D50 runs on four AA batteries.
Sony expects to deliver the PCM-D50 in November, and will
also offer a number of accessories, including a remote commander, tripod stand,
wind screen, leather carrying case and XLR mic adapter.
