HEAR THE TRACK
AEMG's Scott Liggett says the team met with the show's executive producer,
Kevin Burns, and then went back and composed a theme that reflected the fun,
quirky vibe of the new show.
"Kevin is very specific in what he wants," says Liggett, who
had a week to create the show's music. Liggett would send Burns MP3 files for
review and would then listen to his feedback to further develop the theme. The
final piece is a combination of live instruments (percussion and guitar) and
sampled sounds (piano). The drum track is a hybrid, and live brass reinforces
the Latin feel.
Liggett says he uses MOTU Digital Performer, which allows
him work with samples as well as record audio. Mixing is performed internally,
or thought a Mackie d8b console.
"When I do a theme package, it's comprised of different
lengths," he explains. A longer cut for the show introduces the episode, while
shorter lengths can be used as bumpers for going in and out to commercials. In
addition to the original theme, High Maintenance 90210 also licensed tracks from AEMG's sister company,
Opus 1 Production Music.
