POP Sound remixed the soundtracks for the films, including
several in the 6.1 DTS-ES discrete audio format, which adds a center surround
channel behind the audience. The studio also performed conforming to HD picture
and encoding services.
"For films like Saw, Crash and Lord
of War, it really adds something to have
the center surround," says POP Sound's Tim Hoogenakker. "Much of Saw occurs in a small, contained environment where you
hear water pipes, drains and other creepy sounds in the background. It adds to
the impact."
Hoogenakker also prepared mixes of each film in 5.1 Dolby
Digital Surround EX.
Part of the challenge in preparing the Lionsgate titles was ensuring
backward-compatibility. As the new disc formats are playable on older DVD
systems, the soundtracks have to sound great on a variety of consumer
technology. POP Sound has the facilities to service both
Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats. The studio used a combination of Digidesign Pro Tools|HD
3 V.7.2 and AMS Neve digital mixing consoles to complete the project.
