LOS ANGELES - Precision Productions + Post (www.precisionpost.com) recently completed work on a 90-minute documentary titled "Terminal 5." The independent film first aired on GalleryHD and details the history of the now closed architectural landmark at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, as well as one spirited curator's attempt to use the venue as a controversial art installation.
Terminal 5, with its distinct butterfly design, is the work of the late architect Eero Saarinen, and opened in the early 1960s, reflecting the promise commercial air travel. With the subsequent dawn of the jet age, the terminal soon became outdated and eventually closed its doors, laying in disrepair now for years.
Contemporary art curator Rachel K. Ward saw the architectural marvel lying in repose and became determined to stage a public exhibition in the space. The documentary covers the weeks leading up the event, the out-of-control expenses that were incurred, and the unexpected closing of the show after only its first night.
Precision's Joseph Arnao and Martin Fisher directed and produced the project, which was shot in 24p high definition using Sony HDW-900 cameras. The feature was offlined on an Avid Adrenaline and onlined by Jonathan Wallace using Avid DS. Graphics were created by Paul Walsleben in Adobe After Effects 6.5. The final mix was completed by Will Riley using Digidesign Pro Tools. Chris Heath supervised post production. The documentary is available now on DVD.
